A: Elixir is the first Emergency Medical Identification product to use SMS messaging to get ALL medical information to the paramedic or doctor at the scene of an accident or in an emergency situation. All the attending medical officer has to do is give the call centre operator his cell number. Within approximately 30 seconds, he will receive all the patient’s information via SMS directly to his cell phone. This information is critical during the Golden Hour after an accident, it will be the difference between life and death. Some examples of information to be sent via SMS:
Severe allergies to medication: Giving a patient a certain medication they are allergic to could kill them rather than save their life. Medication complications: If a patient is on a blood thinning drug (Warfarin) and receives certain medication, there is a huge risk of haemorrhage, bleeding out and death. Medical devises: There are a huge number of patients with pacemakers, a paramedic needs to know this before treating or again he might kill the patient rather than save their life. Medical conditions: There are hundreds of thousands of patients with medical conditions in South Africa. Diabetics, they can go into a diabetic coma at anytime. Heart condition patients, Organ donors, Epileptic patients and Transplant patients. All of the above conditions need special attention before medical treatment, thus explaining how vital the patient information is to the attending medical officer. Calling a call centre and trying to write down the information, at night, in the rain, sirens blaring and people screaming is virtually impossible. Our new monitoring system together with our Free SMS service will simply, with the click of a mouse SMS all this vital information to the medical officer’s cell phone. This could and will save a patients life. We are implementing this SMS system Free of charge to our patients, therefore making it accessible to everyone who needs it.
Q: What is document storage?
A: Your full medical history with you for life. Elixir Documax is the perfect complement to your Elixir Emergency Disc The document page is the very newest innovation on the system. This facilitates the storing of medical reports on your patient profile. Documents such as prescriptions, ECG reports, X rays, Patient doctor reports, Post Op reports, pathology reports and many more can now be captured and embedded on the Patient profile. Qualified medical officials will now be able to view and print these documents when necessary in emergencies. Since the entire system is Internet based, the service is available anywhere in the world. Simply put, you have your entire medical history with you wherever you are. A: The system is designed to make a number of facilities available to medical personal with regard to both the patient and a medical practice. In both instances there are exceptional benefits to be derived. Q: How does the system relate to the Patient Medical emergencies are going to happen, motor accidents, muggings, heart attacks, strokes, diabetic comas and many, many more. In these cases it is critical that any relevant medical information pertaining to your patient must be available to the medical personnel attending your patient as quickly as possible. This not only relates to critical medical information but also to such detail as the Medical Aid Society to which the patient belongs, and also their membership number. This information will determine where the patient will be taken and therefore the quality of treatment he/she will receive. Our SMS service ensures that the attending officer, within a matter of seconds will receive all this information. The value of this service cannot be overemphasised. On arrival at a hospital, the information will be available to hospital staff on the paramedic’s cell phone. Qualified hospital and Pharmacy staff will have access to your patients’ medical history including your medical reports and prescriptions, via our patient portal www.elxmed.com Q: Who is this emergency call centre? A: The emergency call centre is provided by Chubb security services. Chubb are the largest security organisation in South Africa and their call centre provides Elixir with 24 hour monitoring of all the wearers of Elixir emergency products, for 365 days of the year. This is the most expensive aspect of the Elixir operation and without Chubb, Elixir would be forced to charge patients a monthly fee for monitoring. The service is provided by Chubb, free of charge, as a service to the community. Q: How does Chubb get the information? A: Each bracelet or necklace is supplied in a clear plastic envelope. Inside the envelope is an information sheet that must be filled in by the patient. This form contains all the information required and when completed, must be faxed to Elixir on the fax number that appears on the same form (0860 103 684). You can also go to the REGISTER YOUR DISC page on our information website www.elixirshields.co.za. On receipt of the form, Elixir will capture the information on their computers once captured this information will be instantly available on the World Wide Web. This happens within 48 hours. Generally, the pharmacy, will, as a service, fax the form for the patient. Q: How is this information sent to Chubb? A: The I.T. management of all wearers of Elixir pieces (data transmission, e-mail and our website) is done by South Africa On Line, better known as saol.com. This service is also provided free of charge by SAOL as service to the community. Q: What does the range consist of? A: The bracelets are available for ladies and gents. The only difference between the two is the length of the chain. The necklaces are hung on a 60 cm chain. Elixir manufactures only two different medical identity pieces. An Emergency Bracelet or Necklace a Diabetic Bracelet or Diabetic Necklace It is vital that you understand the concept fully Generally, Elixir does not believe in engraving exact medical conditions on the disc because of the limited space available. More often than not, it is impossible to fit everything on the disc and something will have to be left off. This omission could prove fatal. Elixir therefore wants, as far as possible, to force the attending medical officer to phone the call centre and quote the disc number, or log onto the website www.elxmed.com and enter the disc number. They will then be given a full medical report. They will then be in a position to act correctly.
1. The new emergency bracelet or necklace is engraved as follows
Please note there is an international number that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. All new Discs will now be engraved with the Patient Portal address www.elxmed.com and local call centre number. 2. The diabetic bracelet or necklace is engraved as follows
Diabetics are a special category of patient because they can, and often do, fall into a diabetic coma that if recognised, can quickly be treated with sugar water. Thereafter, the call centre can be contacted for any other information that may be required. Q: What about maintenance of the pieces A: The perception that engraving is forever is not correct, in time it will wear off and become illegible. This will render the piece “Useless”. Elixir levies an annual subscription of R60.00 from the second year (there is no subscription charge for the first year). This entitles the wearer to receive a wallet card providing the same detail as the bracelet and a windscreen sticker alerting officials that the owner subscribes to Elixir emergency service. In addition, the wearer is encouraged to check his bracelet regularly for any defects and every two years is entitled to return the piece to Elixir for complete refurbishing totally free of charge.
