DOWNRIVER COMMUNITY SERVICES NURSE MIDWIFE - CERTIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION I. OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In collaboration with an obstetrician, provides primary obstetrical/gynecological healthcare to essentially normal women, including prenatal care, postpartum care, gynecological care and family planning within the scope of training and in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocol.
II. POSITION PRE-PREQUISITES
1. Current Michigan RN licensure 2. Current specialty licensure as a Nurse-Midwife in Michigan 3. Current ACNM certification 4. Knowledge and ability to apply the science and art of midwifery to practice, involving use of
physical assessment skills and nursing, medical and midwifery theory to diagnose and treat patients.

VI. UNIQUE SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Obtain comprehensive medical, surgical, reproductive, psychosocial and family history on
patients. Identify needs and deviations from normal. Make appropriate referrals to MSS/ISS, WIC, etc.
2. Performs a comprehensive physical examination on patients and identifies deviations from

3. Provides continuing care to assigned patients in the clinic setting, anticipating and
recognizing deviations from normal, initiating treatment, and consulting with a physician as appropriate. This includes but is not limited to: Routine prenatal care; Major and minor; complications of pregnancy; Pre-term labor; Post-dated pregnancy; Yearly gynecological exams; Routine family planning counseling, prescribe and follow-up; Abnormal uterine bleeding; Vaginitis and STD; Complications of birth control
4. Performs minor office procedures. This includes but is not limited to: Cervical Biopsy;
Colposcopy; Endometrial biopsy; IUD insertion/removal; Norplant removal
5. Orders diagnostic tests, medications and lab tests as indicated. Analyzes, interprets and
synthesizes data and applies information to patient management. This includes, but is not limited to: Analgesia, antibiotics, vitamins, antitussives, antiemetics, etc.; Mammography, ultrasounds, NSTs, etc.
6. Provides emotional and educational support to the patient and family, including them in the
decision making process and assisting them with psychological adjustment to pregnancy, childbirth and childrearing, and life changes. This includes, but is not limited to: Prenatal education; Anticipatory guidance for physiological changes; Warning signs of complications; Psychological adjustment to labor; Preventive health care education; Adjustment to menopause
7. Participates in quality improvement activities through chart review, data collection for
outcome statistics, maintenance of practice guidelines in compliance with ACNM standards and ongoing evaluation of practice for areas of improvement.
