BIBLICAL CALENDAR and Bible-Reading Guide for the year 5773/2012-2013. The Jewish Calendar
The Jewish year is lunar year. It consists of 12 lunar months, each of them starts with new
moon and are 29 or 30 days long. A lunar month takes 29 and a half days and a couple of minutes. The lunar year takes 354 1/3 days, it is 11 days less than the solar year. Using lunar
diary we would loose a year in every 33 years. It would mean that even in Australia Santa Claus would come in winter time in every 33 years, but it also would have some disadvantages
so people needed to fit lunar years to the solar year. Fitting the lunar year to solar year goes with leap years with an extra month. Originally every
3rd year was leap year, but after the exile they adopted the Babylonian calendar, where there were 7 leap years in every 19 years (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 19th). For example 2004-2005
was the 5765th year of Jewish calendar, this is the 8th year of a cycle of 19 years, so it is a leap year. It contained a “second Adar” month. The Jewish months were called by numbers
before the exile, but later they adopted Babylonian names. The first month was the month of Passover called Nisan. Later the Day of Trumpet Blasts (Lev 23:24) on the first of Tishrei
became also the New Year in Jewish calendar. The Jewish Bible
This is part of the Christian bible known as Old Testament. It’s Jewish name is an abbreviation: TaNaCH - Torah, Neviim, Ketuvim means Law, Prophets and Scriptures. The
order of these books are a bit different from what we know as Old Testament. The first part is the Law – Torah (Gen-Deut), and then the Neviim Rishonim – The Earlier Prophets (Jos, Jg,
1-2Sa, 1-2Ki) and the Later Prophets (Isa, Jer, Ez, Hos, Joel, Am, Ob, Jon, Mi, Nah, Hab, Zeph, Hag, Ze, Mal) and the scriptures (Psalm, Prov, Job, Songs, Ruth, Lam, Eccl, Esther,
Dan, Ezra, Neh 1-2 Cr). Five of them have a special role in the Jewish tradition (Songs-Esther). These are the “Five Scrolls” – Chamesh Megillot – read on special feasts.
Song of Solomon: 1st Saturday after Passover
The Torah – The Law is read in Synagogue week by week in 55 portions, and is finished in
every year until the day of Simchat Torah. The weekly Torah-Reading is always linked with prophetic readings called “haphtarah”. These readings are only short parts of the books of
This calendar is for the year 5765 (2004-2005), but it contains the days and events of the Hungarian civil and Christian calendar as well. It also contains the Torah readings, and a
recommended Bible reading project for this year. We can follow the books of the Torah week by week, and the five scrolls on five other festival
days. The rest of the Bible can be followed day by day in two chapters of Old Covenant and a small portion of the New Covenant every day.
I wish God’s blessings for your life and your studies of the Bible and Biblical calendar. If you find any mistakes or if you have any remarks of ideas how we can make this calendar more
