Achievements Day was held in Presentation College, Athenry, on Friday, 15th May. This is an important day in the school calendar as it acknowledges the many achievements of students both academic and non-academic. The ceremony was attended by the Principal, Mrs. Mary Forde, Deputy Principal, Mr. Luke Glynn, School Chaplain, Fr. Charlie McDonnell, staff, students and invited guests. On the day, Mass was celebrated by Fr. Charlie. The school choir, musicians and readers participated in this joyful celebration. At the end of the Mass, the Presentation Sisters received a specially commissioned gift of the Stations of the Cross from the staff and students in acknowledgement and appreciation of their immense contribution to education in Athenry. The awards presented to students are listed below. Art Awards: Form 1 - Lauren Niland, Form 2 - Stuart Doherty, Form 3 - Róisín Kennedy, Form 4 - Aishling Fox, Form 5 - Sarah Curran. 1st Year Maths Awards: First year students took part in the Irish Junior Maths Competition. Four students qualified for the Galway final. They are Donal Delaney, Siobhán Gardiner, Roisin Kennedy and Shauna Moore-Davis. Junior Quiz Awards: Darragh Murphy and Vincent Doyle. Darragh and Vincent were members of the team that won the Credit Union Junior Quiz for the fourth year in a row. They also won the Connaught title of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association Quiz and came 2nd in the All-Ireland final. They were among the last 16 schools in the TCH All- Ireland Schools’ Quiz. Quiz Awards: Conor Jenson and Alan Devane. Conor and Alan were members of the team which came 2nd in Conradh na Gaeilge Tráth na gCeist. Minor Girls’ Athlete of the Year: Claire Ryder. Minor Boys’ Athlete of the Year: Paul Fitzpatrick. Badminton Awards: Tom Doherty. Basketball Award: Andrew Dolan Minor and Junior Basketball Award: Rachael Bannon and Iarlaith Green 1st Year Camogie: Michelle Dunleavy Chess Awards: Evan Farrell and Elaine Geaney were members of the team that won 2nd prize in the Irish Secondary Schools’ chess final. Equestrian Award: Maria McNamara. Maria was a member of the team that came 5th in the All-Ireland Interschools league and 1st in the Mullingar show. 1st Year Girls’ Footballer of the Year: Iarlaith Greene 1st Year Boys’ Football: Niall Kilkelly Golf Award: Conor Lally. Conor was a member of the team that won the Connaught U-15 Golf final in Castlebar recently. 1st Year Hurling Awards: Conor Shaughnessy and Ciaran O’Dwyer. 1st Year Girls’ Soccer: Sinead Gaffney. Interprovincial Girls’ Soccer: Anna Lane. Sarah and Tara achieved a commendation for their artwork out of thousands of entries in the Texaco Art Competition. “Make-a-Book Exhibition” Awards: Áine McDermott, Siobhán Conneely, Anita Long, Seán Derrig-Ryan, Diarmuid Kelly, Andrew Quinn, Joseph McNamara, Niall Noone, Ciana Walsh. Chess Awards: The following students won 2nd prize in the Irish Secondary Schools’ Chess Finals: Ronan Fogarty and Zachary Browne. Minor Camogie Award: Hazel Kilkelly Equestrian Awards: Tara McNamara and Joe McNamara. Tara and Joe were members of the team that came fifth in the All-Ireland Interschools League and 1st in the Mullingar show. Gaelic Football: Seán Kilduff and Damien Culkin Golf Awards: Thomas Reaney and Kelan Connolly. Thomas and Kelan were members of the team who won the Connaught U-15 Golf final in Castlebar recently. 2nd Year Hurling: David Concannon. 2nd Year Rugby Player of the Year: Niall Quinn. U- 14 Boys’ Soccer: Patrick Hannon U – 15 Boys’ Soccer: Brendan Brennan 2nd Year Activities Soccer Player of the Year: James Cummins U-15 Girls’ Soccer: Linda Corcoran. U-16 Girls’ Soccer: Keira Cormican. Interprovincial Girls’ Soccer: Keira Cormican and Linda Corcoran. Keira and Linda played for the Connaught U-15 side. Extra-Curricular Award: Sabrina Caulfield 2nd Year Volleyball: Aisling Keane. Art Awards: Colm Harnett and Ashley McDonnell. Siansa Irish Music Awards: Shauna Coppinger, Maeve Forde. Shauna and Maeve are members of ‘Anáil’, the traditional music group that won second prize in the All-Ireland final of Siansa Gael Linn. The competition took place in the University Concert Hall in Limerick and was broadcast live on Raidió na Gaeltachta. PRISM Junior Mathematics Award: This joint award was presented to Hannah Conroy-Broderick and Aideen Connolly. Hannah and Aideen were placed in the top 100 in the country. Nearly three thousand students participated in this examination nationwide. Junior Quiz Award: Hannah Conroy- Broderick. Hannah was a member of the team that came 2nd in Conradh na Gaeilge, Tráth na gCeist. Inter Girls’ Athlete of the Year: Ashley McDonnell. 3rd Year Badminton Award: Conor Doherty. U- 16 Boys’ Basketball: Conor Henry. Cadette Girls’ Basketball: Charlotte Cooney. Extra-Curricular Award: Donna Caulfield. Junior Hurler of the Year Award: Alan Lawless. Bank of Ireland Awards: As part of their portfolio preparation, LCVP students work as a group and plan an enterprise. Two groups were nominated for these awards. The first group organised a music concert given by The Deans: Sarah Coen, Alan Murphy, Lauren Scanlon, Siofra Mannion, Emma O’Reilly, Chloe Greally, Leah Creaven, Thomas Flynn, Chris Fahy, Kirby Brennan, Daniel Cowman, Karl Rafferty, Michael O’Rourke, Nathan Sweeney, Paul Costello, Jason McGuire, Michael Farrell, Daragh Loughnane, Kevin Madden. The second group organised a photo exhibition for President Mary McAleese on her visit to Presentation College. They also assisted in selecting photos for a book, which will celebrate the Centenary of the Presentation Sisters in Athenry. The students include Mary Mitchell, Niamh Higgins, Ruth Heneghan and Aoife Hennelly. Gaisce Awards The following students qualified for the President’s Award bronze medal. To earn this medal they had to complete four different challenge areas: Community Involvement, Personal Skill, Physical Recreation and an Adventure involving two overnights, camping, canoeing and a 25k hike. These students are members of ‘Anáil’, the traditional music group that won second prize in the All-Ireland final of Siansa Gael Linn. TY Musical Award: Jason Greene. 4th Year Musical Award: Anthony Conerney Art Award - Musical: Jason Holland. PRISM Mathematics Award: Jack Rawlings. Jack achieved the highest score in the school in this examination. He finished in the top 100 out of more than 3,000 students. Senior Quiz Awards: Jason Brown, Eoghan Page, Thomas Molloy, Gerard Forde. These students were members of the team that won the Credit Union Senior Quiz for the third year in a row. They won the Connaught title of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association Quiz and came 4th in the All-Ireland final. They also won the Conradh na Gaeilge Tráth na gCeist for the third year in a row and they were among the last 16 schools in the TCH All –Ireland Schools’ Quiz. Transition Year Work Placement Awards: Chloe Callanan and Joseph Duff. Most Improved Athlete of the Year: Shannon Freaney. Senior Girls’ Athlete of the Year: Kelly O’Donoghue. Senior Girls’ Basketball Award: Fabienne Cooney. Fabienne was captain of the team that won the western region basketball competition. Senior Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year: Fabienne Cooney. Senior Boys’ Basketball - Most Improved Player: Peter McKeon. Senior Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year: Eoghan Commins. Junior Camogie Award: Shannon Freaney. TY Dance Award: Áine Doheny. TY Equestrian Award: Keelan Dempsey. Keelan was a member of the team that was placed 5th in the All-Ireland Interschools League and 1st in the Mullingar show. Senior Ladies Footballer of the Year: Fabienne Cooney. Juvenile Footballer of the Year: Dean Healy. Junior Footballer of the Year Award: Darragh Glynn. Senior Footballer of the Year: Ciarán Cleary Football Award: Thomas Flynn. Senior Rugby: Conor Kindregan. 4th Year Girls’ Soccer: Siobhán Kelly. Siobhán was captain of the team that won the Connaught mixed schools’ soccer tournament for the third year in a row. U-18 Girls’ Soccer: Tracey Hackett. Interprovincial Boys’ Soccer: William Lane. Senior Boys’ Soccer Award: Declan Cullen 4th Year Sports Leadership Awards: Shauna Curley, Laura Byrne, Niamh Grady, Karen Walsh. Students’ Council Award: Tara Roche. Gaelic Lady Sports Personality of the Year/Mairéad Meehan Award: Katie O’Dwyer. Katie’s achievements include All-Ireland Senior A camogie finalist, All-Ireland Junior A camogie winner, captain of the Connaught interprovincial team in 2008, full back on the interprovincial Connaught team 2009, Athenry senior club All-Ireland finalist. She has represented her county at all levels. Senior Hurler of the Year/Justin Cheevers Award: Conor Burke. Conor has displayed great leadership qualities as a hurler and a student. We wish him well in his involvement with the Galway minor hurling team. Principal’s Awards: Michael Mitchell, Tara Roche, Tina McGrath.
